From Harlem with Love: Inside the Story of NYC’s Most Crave-Worthy Bakery

From Harlem with Love: Inside the Story of NYC’s Most Crave-Worthy Bakery

On Lexington Avenue, around 105th Street, the aroma of something sweet has a way of stopping people in their tracks. Maybe it is the promise of a warm cookie. Maybe it is frosting, chocolate, or freshly baked cake. Or maybe it is the unmistakable feeling that, just inside 1673 Lexington Ave in East Harlem, there is a treat waiting with your name on it.

That is the magic of Baked Cravings, a bakery founded in 2017 by Craig Watson with a simple but powerful idea: everyone deserves to enjoy a delicious dessert, including people living with severe peanut and tree-nut allergies.

Today, Baked Cravings ships treats nationwide, serves celebrations across New York City, and supplies special spaces such as Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden suites, along with airport concession stands. But no matter how far the bakery travels, its heart remains firmly planted in Harlem.

A Bakery Born from a Real Need

Before he became a bakery founder, Craig Watson spent years as a finance executive, earning a reputation for helping companies navigate challenges and find their way toward growth. He also served as the CFO of a bakery for five years, learning the rhythm of the business from the inside: the early mornings, the careful ordering, the customer conversations, and the small details that turn flour and sugar into something memorable.

Baking became more than a professional interest. For Craig, it was a way to unwind from the demands of executive life in New York City. There was something grounding about working with his hands, following a recipe, and watching simple ingredients become a cake, cookie, or cupcake that could make someone smile.

Then the bakery downsized and closed its East Harlem storefront. Rather than seeing an empty space, Craig saw an opportunity, and a responsibility.

As a father who understood nut allergies firsthand, he had experienced the worry that comes with trying to find desserts a child can safely enjoy. He noticed a clear void in New York City: there were no dedicated bakeries focused entirely on being nut-free and peanut-free. Families had plenty of reasons to celebrate, but far fewer places where they could order sweets with genuine confidence.

So Craig took over the East Harlem space and built something new inside it. In 2017, Baked Cravings began its story with a neighborhood storefront, a big mission, and a motto that still says it all: “You Crave ’em, We Bake ’em.”

You can read more about Craig’s journey and the bakery’s beginnings on the Baked Cravings Our Story page.

What “Nut-Free” Means at Baked Cravings

Baked Cravings is a dedicated 100% peanut-free and tree-nut-free facility. That commitment is not a decorative phrase on a sign; it shapes how the bakery sources ingredients, prepares products, packs orders, and serves customers.

The team uses high-quality ingredients from nut-free vendors, follows strict packing processes, and conducts regular testing. Each step is part of the larger promise to create treats that are not only rich, moist, and irresistibly delicious, but also made in an environment designed with allergy-aware families in mind.

For parents, that can mean less time reading labels with a magnifying glass and more time planning the fun part of a celebration. For children, it can mean seeing a cupcake, doughnut, or cookie and knowing it is meant for them, too.

And that feeling matters. Customers have shared stories of walking into the Harlem bakery with years of caution behind them, only to discover a colorful case full of desserts they could finally consider. Some young customers have never had a cupcake before. Their first bite is more than a bite of cake. It is a moment of surprise, relief, and pure joy.

Cake in a Cup and the Art of Making Dessert Portable

Every bakery has its signatures. At Baked Cravings, one of the most recognizable is Cake in a Cup, a portable individual serving of moist cake layered into a convenient cup. It is cake without the balancing act, the oversized plate, or the question of who gets the corner piece.

The idea is playful, practical, and very New York. Cake in a Cup travels well from the bakery to a birthday gathering, office celebration, school event, or quiet moment on the couch when the craving has become impossible to ignore.

The Cake in a Cup collection includes favorites such as Vanilla, Chocolate, Red Velvet, Lemon, Confetti, and Cookies & Cream, along with gift boxes and select infused options for adult celebrations. The deluxe starter pack brings several flavors together, making it an especially cheerful introduction to the Baked Cravings way of doing dessert.

But Cake in a Cup is only one chapter of the menu. The bakery’s classic cupcakes range from chocolate and vanilla to red velvet, lemon, confetti, gluten-free banana, vegan varieties, and custom creations for birthdays, gender reveals, and milestone moments.

Then there are the OG Cookies: soft-centered, bold-flavored cookies made for serious cravings. The OG Cookie collection includes familiar favorites with Baked Cravings twists, from chocolate chip creations to cookies layered with cake, confetti, cream, and plenty of personality.

And when the craving calls for something intensely chocolatey, the brownies answer with crackly tops, fudgy centers, and flavors that make “just one” a charming but wildly optimistic plan.

More Than a Neighborhood Bakery

Baked Cravings has grown from its East Harlem storefront into a national brand, but its growth has never meant leaving the community behind.

The bakery hires teens through New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program, giving young people hands-on experience in customer service, computer skills, and the fundamentals of running a business. In a city where a first job can become a first lesson in confidence, responsibility, and possibility, those opportunities matter.

A young employee may begin by helping customers choose a cupcake or preparing an order. Along the way, they learn how a business communicates, solves problems, handles busy days, and creates an experience people want to return to. That is community-building in an apron, and it is very much part of the Baked Cravings story.

The bakery’s Harlem roots also show up in the way the team serves people. Customers describe the staff as welcoming, patient, helpful, and sweet: an appropriate review for a bakery, but meaningful all the same. Whether someone is ordering last-minute birthday cupcakes, planning a large corporate event, or asking careful questions about allergens, the goal is to make the experience feel personal.

From Lexington Avenue to the Whole Country

Baked Cravings has earned recognition along the way, including a Best of Manhattan award and recognition as one of the top minority-owned businesses in America. The bakery also carries a 4.7-star review reputation, reflecting the loyalty of customers who return for the flavor, the service, the safety standards, and the feeling of being understood.

For customers outside New York, the treats that ship nationally bring a little Harlem sweetness to doorsteps across the country. Gift boxes, cookie tins, brownies, cupcakes, and Cake in a Cup selections make it possible to send a thoughtful surprise without trying to wrap a layer cake for a cross-country journey. The gift box collection is made for birthdays, thank-yous, office celebrations, holidays, and those wonderfully specific occasions that can be summed up as “I saw this and thought of you.”

For returning customers, the loyalty program makes it easy to earn points with purchases and redeem them for rewards. Because once you find a bakery that understands both your cravings and your concerns, a return visit tends to feel less like a decision and more like a tradition.

A Harlem Heart with a National Reach

The story of Baked Cravings is not simply about a finance executive who learned to bake, or a storefront that became a growing company. It is about noticing what was missing and deciding to build it.

Craig Watson saw families navigating allergy anxiety and imagined a different kind of bakery. One where safety was built into the business, where pure ingredients and fresh baking mattered, and where nobody had to choose between peace of mind and a truly delicious dessert.

That vision still lives in the faces of customers outside the Harlem storefront, especially the young ones tasting their first cupcake. It lives in the employees gaining their first business experience. It lives in the gift boxes traveling across the country and the desserts waiting in stadium suites, airport stands, offices, classrooms, and kitchens.

From East Harlem to everywhere cravings happen, Baked Cravings continues to bake with purpose, pride, and plenty of frosting.

You Crave ’em, We Bake ’em.
